In this course, students explore The History of Shastriya Sangeet, tracing the roots and growth of India’s classical music tradition. Beginning with Vedic chanting, we examine the philosophies of the Natyashastra and observe how the Bhakti movement transformed the cultural landscape. By studying texts like the Sangita Ratnakara, students understand the regional and religious shifts that formed Indian music. We’ll then explore the confluence of Persian-Arab influences on Hindustani music and discuss contemporary Indian music.
